About Amavasya: Amāvāsyā (Sanskrit: अमावस्या / আমাবস্যা) means dark moon lunar phase in Sanskrit. The word Amāvāsyā is common to almost all Nepalese and Indian languages as most of them are derived from Sanskrit. Ancient Babylonian, Greek and Indian calendars used 30 lunar phases, called tithi in India. The dark moon tithi is when the Moon is within the 12 degrees of angular distance between the Sun and Moon before conjunction (syzygy). The New Moon tithi (called Pratipada or Pratima) is the 12 angular degrees after syzygy. Amāvāsyā is often translated as new moon since there is no standard term for the Moon before conjunction in English. source- Wikipedia

Which Amavasya is most powerful?

In Hindu astrology and mythology, Amavasya refers to the new moon day and is considered an important day for various spiritual practices and rituals. There is an Amavasya in each month, and hence, there are many Amavasya days throughout the year. However, the significance of Amavasya may vary depending on various factors, including planetary positions, specific astrological conjunctions, and the timing of festivals.

One of the most powerful and widely celebrated Amavasya is Mahalaya Amavasya. Mahalaya Amavasya usually falls in the month of Ashwin (September–October) and is considered highly auspicious for performing rituals for departed ancestors. It marks the beginning of Devi Paksha, the period when Goddess Durga incarnates on earth.

It is important to note that the significance of Amavasya may also be influenced by regional beliefs and customs. Different communities and regions may have their own specific rituals and ceremonies associated with particular Amavasya days.

If you are considering performing a specific ritual or observing Amavasya for a particular purpose, it is advisable to consult a knowledgeable person or priest who can provide guidance based on the specific astrological and cultural context.

  • Paying homage to ancestors: Many people perform rituals and tarpan (water offerings) during Amavasya to honour their ancestors and seek blessings from them.
  • Fasting and purification: Some individuals fast on Amavasya or engage in purification practices such as meditation, prayer, and charity.
  • Temple Visits: Devotees often visit temples on Amavasya day to offer prayers and seek blessings.
  • Charity and acts of kindness: It is considered auspicious to engage in acts of charity and kindness on this day.

The significance and practices associated with Amavasya may vary across regions and communities. It is essential to understand the specific cultural and religious context of your tradition or belief system. If you have specific concerns or intentions, you can also seek guidance from a knowledgeable person, such as a priest or spiritual leader, for advice tailored to your circumstances.

What is the starting time of Amavasya?

The timing of Amavasya or Amavasya varies every month as it is based on the lunar calendar. Amavasya is the day when the Moon is not visible in the sky because it is located between the Earth and the Sun.
